No (Market Cycle) Fear or Loathing and teenage idols

A teen idol seems like an odd place to start the discussion for the vision for Auben.

But it’s part of the backstory.

Growing up as an aspiring writer in Louisville, KY, Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson was a god to me. Independent, iconoclastic and unhinged, Hunter was everything I thought an aspiring writer should be. Never a likely candidate for Rotarian of the Year, Hunter was, above all else, committed to his vision.

With time I understood his commitment to his vision—and the hedonism his persona required—left a trail of destruction he towed in his wake. Hunter, also with time, became less interesting than Branson, Sinek, Grant, Lencioni and many other writers committed to visions of creation and community.

Life changes perspective and if we are lucky our vision improves.

As Auben looks at the near future market for B and C class rentals, we do so through the lens of 15-year veterans of the industry.

Ahead, we see a market rich with opportunity. We see the alignment of the market and our model creating an opportunity to expand the operational foundation we have been intently working on for the last 5 years. It’s a model which seeks to improve communities by investing responsibly and implementing lessons learned from balancing institutional oversight with local market expertise.

Next market up is Greenville/Spartanburg. And Charlotte will be shortly behind it. Auben is choosing to intentionally grow where we can make the greatest impact, and we are seeking more team members and investors to join our mission.  We hope you will join us.

Many things from Hunter S. Thompson have faded into the past, but these words still resonate today in shaping Auben’s vision:

A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstances.”

Join us April 19th for our book club discussion of Simon Sinek’s Leaders Eat Last at 909 Walker Street, Augusta, GA. We will be discussing Chapters 19-23, and lunch will be provided!
