Q: Who was your first business mentor? 

A: My friend of 17 years, Chris Chadwick of San Diego, CA. We work together every day as he is my pastor and boss.

Q: Who was your first mentor in real estate? 

A:  My friend of eight years, Jason Spillman of San Diego, CA. He’s a Captain (O-6) in the Navy, and invests in Memphis, TN.

Q: What is your favorite book? 

A: I have to mention two: The Bible & anything by Louis L’Amour!

Q: What is the best lesson you have learned in real estate? 

A: Deliberate action solves most problems!

Q: How many properties do you own? 

A: Six, including the 29-unit property across from Auben’s Augusta offices that we just put under contract.

Q: When did you start investing? 

A: My wife, Leslie, and I bought our first rental property in 2019, but it really started with the purchase of our primary residence in 2014.  Our home appreciated 150% in five years which paved the way for a HELOC which gave us the cash to start investing.

Q: Why do you Invest?

A: To care well for my family, and to be able to give generously to others.

Q: What is the best advice you have received?  

A: “Learn everything you can about everything you can, and one day your day will come.”

Q: Do you have a favorite podcast?

A:  The one that started me on our multi-family journey: Apartment Building Investing with Michael Blank.

Q: Any hobbies?

A: I’m usually too busy with working, investing in real estate, and raising three kids under four years old . . . But when I have time, reading and strategy board games.

Q: What is the best advice you could give someone else? 

A: Apply your business mind to your personal life, and keep your priorities straight. “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”  Money isn’t the only area of life that’s evaluated with a balance sheet!

Q: Is there a place for you where time slows down? 

A: Early morning before my family is awake and I can read or study.

Q: I was introduced to Auben ______.

A: When we were looking for our first rental property, we literally Googled best markets for investing in rental properties. Augusta.  Then we literally Googled best real estate companies in Augusta. Auben. ‘Nuff said!

Q: If you weren’t investing in real estate you would be_______.

A: Probably floundering around in the stock market.

Q: If you were to start over_______.

A: I’d invest in multi-family syndications sooner, start a Qualified Retirement Program sooner, and have kids sooner!
