Investor Interview with Bob Kim

Bob Kim Investor Blog

Investing is for all types of people, from many backgrounds and schools of thought. You may find similarities among other investors, or learn something new!

Herewith tips and insight, is Bob Kim, Investor

Q: Who was your first business mentor?

A: Never had just one. I learned bits and pieces from multiple people, books, online, etc., and still do. Trial and (a lot of) error.

Q: Who was your first mentor in real estate?

A: I never had just one. I was, and still am, a seminar and course junkie, and enjoy networking with others–both newbies and experienced with real estate. I use the bits and pieces that work in my specific markets and modify them to best work for me.

Q: What is your favorite book?

A: Without Remorse by Tom Clancy

Q: What is the best lesson you have learned in real estate?

A: Never break the rules once you learn them. I had a scuba dive instructor, who was also a certified cave diver, tell me that everyone who ever died during a cave dive did so because they broke a rule they had learned to not break. Every time I lost money in real estate is because I broke a rule I had learned to not break.

Q: How many properties do you own?

A: 20 properties and some first-position mortgage notes

Q: When did you start investing?

A: Very intermittently, with one out-of-state rental property, in the late 1980’s. Full-time in July 2005.

Q: Why do you Invest?

A: To spend more time with my family.

Q: What is the best advice you have received?

A: How we do anything is how we do everything.

Q: Do you have a favorite podcast?

A: What’s a podcast?

Q: Any hobbies?

A: Reading, networking, community service projects, stuff to do with the wife.

Q: What is the best advice you could give someone else?

A: “To do what is best in life: To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!” –Conan the Barbarian (best read in Arnold’s voice for maximum effect.)

Q: Is there a place for you where time slows down?

A: Sitting in a comfortable chair with one of our cats in my lap while thinking of ways to create value in the lives of good people, and create mayhem in the lives of bad people.

Q: If you were a member of a music group, it would be _________?

A: behind the scenes as a booking agent and publicist for any music group

Q: I was introduced to Auben ______.

A: Through meeting the founder, Tyson Schuetze. Tyson and I first met at real estate investing seminars when we were both starting as full-time real estate investors and I was very much impressed, and influenced, by his high level of integrity. It never ceases to amaze me how people like him can accomplish so much in just one lifetime.

Q: If you weren’t investing in real estate you would be_______.

A: A full-time engineer somewhere doing community service activities in my spare time. Or maybe working as a clown in a traveling circus doing community service activities in my spare time.

Q: If you were to start over_______.

A: I’d learn much more quickly how to screen out dishonest people and let only trustworthy ones into my life.
